The Maiden Softball team went to 6-0 in the home tournament this weekend, bringing the Maidens’ record 13-4 for this season.
“I think we have done a good job of hitting the ball,” Coach Brian Legan said. “Our defense is very much improved over the last few years.”
Legan said the Maidens have been working hard to get better.
“Overall team speed is better than it has been, but it’s something we always need to work on,” Legan said. “It would be nice to be able to do some hit-and-run-type situations.”
Three graduated players left underclassmen spots to fill.
“We are working hard to develop these three spots with our underclassmen,” Legan said. “We have some promising pitchers coming, but a catcher with experience is a little harder to come by.”
Senior catcher Averi Gray said she needs to work on her mentality.
The Maidens lost to Dumas in bi-district last season.
“How we can get farther than bi-district is when we are playing, start from the first inning,” senior pitcher Zoey Teichroeb said. “We need to keep playing good until the game is over.”
Junior infielder Monica Morin said she lifts up the Maidens spirit.
“Motivating my teammates is my strength,” Morin said. “I know what it takes to uplift other people.”
The Maidens are striving to go beyond bi-district this season.
“I think we are going to have to keep working every day with a great attitude,” Legan said. “Focusing on doing your job well because the team is counting on it. If we can do this, we can be even better than last year.”
The Maidens will host Snyder tomorrow as preseason winds down. The Maidens will face Fort Stockton in their first district game on March 10.
