Eight tennis players advance to regionals

The Tribe tennis team scored 85 points in spring tennis district on April 16 at the district meet on the home courts. Eight SHS players advanced to regionals by placing either first or second in their events.

In women’s singles, senior Paulina Morales Mendoza took the championship, 6-4, 6-3 over Andrews’ Aubren Jeppersen.

In men’s singles, senior Justin Giesbrecht took second, winning three rounds but falling to Andrews’ Jathan Slaughter in the finals.

In women’s doubles, the team of seniors Marcela Guevara and Lauren Smith took the championship, defeating Andrews’ Jennifer Argumedo and Kaitlin Argabright, 6-2, 6-2.

In men’s doubles, the team of senior Daniel Fehr and junior Danni Klassen took the championship, defeating senior James Giesbrecht and sophomore Ruger Scott in the finals. Giesbrecht and Scott also advanced to regionals.

In mixed doubles, the team of junior Alyssa Gonzales and senior Jason Giesbrecht defeated Greenwood’s Nance and Griffin to take third overall.

Regional action will be on April 28-29 at the McLeod Tennis Center at Texas Tech.
