Indian basketball to host Andrews tonight

District opener– With 19 points, junior post Blake Hamblin led the Indians in the first district game in Pecos on Jan. 21. The Indians dominated the Eagles, 86-26.

The Indian basketball team will host Andrews at 7:30 p.m. tonight in district play.

Andrews is 2-0 in district, after defeating Monahans (1-1) and Fort Stockton (1-1). Pecos is 0-2.

“Our district is not particularly strong this year,” Coach David Williams said. “The only exception is Andrews and us. Because of this, we scheduled a very difficult predistrict to ensure we know how to respond in a big game. Hopefully the lumps we have taken from some 6A teams will pay off in the play offs.”

The Indians defeated the Pecos Eagles on Jan. 21, putting them at 1-0 in district and 16-6 overall as they continue their quest for a district championship. Three Indians had double figures against Pecos: junior post Blake Hamblin with 19, junior guard Eli Beard with 18 and junior Parker Freeman with 12.

“I think we need to work on consistently playing at a high level against these lower level teams because we know what we are capable of doing, and we know that we can make a huge run,” Freeman said. “It’s just a matter of maintaining it through a weak district.”

Andrews presents the biggest obstacle to a title.

“We’re completely prepared right now,” junior guard Kross Carter said. “All that’s left to do is execute the game plan and win the game.”
