Indian basketball hosts Central tonight

Getting by– Junior guard Eli Beard drives to the basket during preseason play against Levelland on Dec. 17. Beard had 20 points in the Indian victory over the Lobos.

The Indian basketball team will host San Angelo Central tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Indians are midway through preseason play while preparing for district which begins on Jan 21 at Pecos.

“We have played Frenship twice, Rockwell and Palo Duro,” junior forward Caden Cottrell said. “We learned a lot in those games and had a real experience with what we would see in the play offs.”

Senior guard Brecken Swimmer sees playing higher population schools as an advantage.

“We’ve played so many big teams this year,” Swimmer said. “We’ve played 5As and 6As, and it is really preparing us for the future.”

District 2-4A will not present the same challenges as the preseason.

“Andrews is our biggest competition in district,” junior guard Elijah Beard said. “They’re the only team that can compete with us.”

Beard is new to the Indian program, moving from Big Sandy over the summer.

“Eli brings so much to the table,” senior guard Stephen Regalado said. “He hustles offensively and defensively.”

The Indians took their record to 8-3 after defeating Levelland, 68-38, on Tuesday.

Coach David Williams hopes that the mostly 6A preseason schedule will get the Indians ready for district and beyond.

The Indians will play in the Whataburger Tournament on Dec. 27-28 in Saginaw.
