Speedy Perez– Sophomore guard Havyn Perez takes off on a fast break during district action with Estacado on Jan. 24. The Maidens fell to the Lady Matadors, 49-48, on a buzzer beater.

The Maiden basketball team will face Brownfield in a must-win situation tonight.

With only two district wins, the Maidens need to pick up two more to advance.

Estacado defeated the Maidens, 50-49, with the Maidens only fielding four players due to fouls at the end. With about 10 seconds left, sophomore guard Havyn Perez made a lay up putting the Maidens ahead 49-48. Estacado then ran the ball down the court and won the game in the final seconds.

“We didn’t have enough players,” senior guard Adriana Romero said. “It was tough on defense.”

With junior guard Kylee Seay in an arm cast and sophomore guard Mikenzie Stokes under concussion protocol, the Maidens only had seven players. When senior guard Kynedy Rosalez fouled out in the fourth quarter, the Maidens were forced to deal with Lady Matadors with only four eligible players.

“We didn’t have any wings,” Rosalez said. “We didn’t really get any breaks, and when we ran into some foul trouble, there was nobody there to replace me.”

With an overall record of 9-18 and a district record of 2-4, the Maidens have four games remaining, and they must win two of them to advance.

“Making my free throws could have made the outcome of the game better,” Romero said. “We need to work on making our shots.”

The Maidens must play through their obstacles with confidence.

“I feel confident about the game against Brownfield,” Rosalez said. “We just need to work on making our shots. We can’t go into the game already thinking that we’re beat.”
