The varsity softball team is currently playing in the Wimberley tournament through Saturday.

The Maidens lost a four graduates from last year’s area-qualifying team.

“The girls are working extremely hard in practice and are starting to come together as a team,” Coach Carol Vaughn said. “Every year we graduate leadership, and every year the next leaders step up to take their place.”

In the Lubbock tournament on Feb. 18-20, the Maidens took one win, five losses and two ties, while their first regular season game hosting Alpine was cancelled due to weather.

The Maidens hope to make it farther into the playoffs this season after falling to Snyder in the area round last season.

“Losing a lot of seniors was hard,” sophomore pitcher Jodie Vaughn said. “It’s going to be hard to recover because we lost some key players. They were great leaders and they knew how to welcome people to the team. The younger classmen have stepped up to the challenge.”
