Not so fast– Senior post Brittany Kelly rejects a Rangerette’s shot during district play on Feb. 2. The 52-35 win ensured the Maidens part of the district title if they win their last two district games.

The Maidens will play their final home game at 6:30 p.m. tonight against Andrews coming off the high of a 52-35 win over the Greenwood Rangerettes to tie for first place in district.

The win brings the Maiden record to 7-1 in district and 17-11 on the season. The Maidens shot 44 percent from the three-point line which helped boost the Maidens to a win, something they could not achieve in Greenwood when senior guard Kendall Freeman couldn’t make anything fall. Freeman redeemed herself against the Rangerettes on Tuesday with 10 points.

“I am really happy with the way we played last night,” Freeman said. “We really shot the ball well and out rebounded Greenwood.”

Senior post Kelea Pool added 20 points, while senior post Brittany Kelly had 10.

“I thought we really played well as a team last night,” Kelly said. “We shared the ball well and hustled hard.”

The Maidens played to a larger fan base on Tuesday firing their work ethic.

“Tonight we really showed how tough we can be,” Coach Leland Bearden said. “I was really proud of the girls’ intensity and desire to play hard; it really showed tonight.”

The Maidens had 28 rebounds during the win over Greenwood including four defensive rebounds from junior guard Kynedy Rosalez.

“Our effort was really good tonight,” Rosalez said. “We really proved to everyone tonight that we deserve a share of the number one seed in district.”

According to Bearden there will be a playoff for first seed in district at a neutral site and time yet to be determined.

With only two district games remaining, the Maidens must turn up the intensity for the more challenging playoffs.

“We have to continue to work harder and harder day in and day out if we want to be where we were last year,” Pool said. “Our goal is to be at the regional tournament, but to do that we need to take one game at a time and not look too far forward.”
