The Maiden golf team will compete in its first spring tournament in Monahans on Friday and Saturday.

The Maidens were supposed to kick off the spring season last week at the Fort Stockton Invitational, but it was cancelled due to weather.

“I wish we really would’ve gotten to play last week,” sophomore Alyssa Garcia said, “but it’s ok because it just gave us one more week to prepare for the Monahans tournament.”

The Maidens got third place in district last year, missing regionals by only a couple of strokes.

“We really should have been at the regional tournament last year,” junior Lauren Franco said. “We just struggled the last round of district and couldn’t quite finish.”

The Maidens said they were excited about the season.

“I am really looking forward to this year,” junior Aryssa Nichols said. “I really feel like we have learned a lot from being so close last year; we just need to keep working hard every day in practice.”

The Maidens suffered from inexperience last season.

“I think our girls learned last year what varsity golf is really like,” Coach Mitch Shain said. “After being so close to making it to regionals last year, I think the girls are starting to realize what it takes to make it to the next level.”
