Indians blank Big Spring, begin district on Tuesday

Not today– Senior pitcher Jessie Alonzo holds the Steers to only two hits during preseason play on March 10. The Indians took the win over Big Spring, 10-0.

The Indian baseball team took its record to 7-3-1 after a 10-0 win over Big Spring at Robert Ryan Field on March 19 with senior Jessie Alonzo pitching the win.

The Indians play their last preseason game tonight versus Littlefield at Robert Ryan Field at 7 p.m.

The Indians are hitting a groove with little flux since team faced the least amount of coaching changes from last season to this season. The baseball coaches under Head Coach Mike Browning were a few of the constants in the Indian athletic programs from last season.

“In football and basketball I had to adjust to Coach Jackson and Coach Williams,” senior leftfielder Sabraun Adams said. “It’s nice to come back to familiar coaches.”

It is still early in the season but the team works together like a brotherhood.

“We are woking well together,” junior pitcher Royce Snethen said. “We get along great. I think if we play as well as we get along we’ll have a great season.”

The core of the Indian team has been on traveling teams and little league teams together and have bonded over time.

“The players are my brothers,” senior pitcher Justin Hernandez said. “I’ve been playing with some of the guys since we were little.”

The Indians begin district on March 24 against Greenwood at Robert Ryan field.

“Practices are going really well,” Snethen said. “We started off at a faster pace, and we are more serious. We do a lot of drills on fundamentals and that’s how you improve.”

Hernandez said the new district will be easier than the previous one.

“The new district doesn’t have as many difficult teams,” Hernandez said. “Last year we had a team that qualified for state in our district.”
