Champions Principal Randy Hicks presents the district championship trophy to the Maiden volleyball team minutes after a win over Andrews clinched part of the district crown on Oct. 29. The Maidens tied with Cooper for the title and due to a coin flip will play as the second seed in bi-district action.

With a 25-15, 25-16, 25-10 win over Andews Oct. 29, the Maiden volleyball team took their first district title since 2007.

“It feels very good to win,” senior middle blocker Maribel Mendoza said. “They haven’t done it in a long time so it feels good to be the first.”

The Maiden volleyball team will be the home team in the bi-district game versus the Pampa Harvesters at 7 p.m. on Nov. 5 at Plainview High School. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students.

The Maidens share a district co-championship with Cooper, but after the two teams flipped, the Maidens took the second place postition in the playoffs.

The Maidens finished the regualr season with at 24-13 over all record and a 8-2 distict record. The Maidens had to win against Andrews to keep the tie with Cooper.

“Winning means that all our hard work has paid off,” sophomore outside hitter Kendall Freeman said. “I’m very proud of the team.”

Medoza had two block-assists against Andrews but thinks she needs to work on that for the playoffs.

“We need to work on our blocks,” Mendoza said. “We have to go up strong to protect our court.”

One of the strengths of the team is that they play well together.

“We’ve grown close as a team,” Freeman said. “We’ve learned to play together too.”

Freeman had 20 digs and 17 kills against Andrews, while senior outside hitter Hope Hick had nine digs and 10 kills. Sophomore setter Lexie Shain scored 14 service points, two aces and 17 assists.
