The UIL academic team took the sweepstakes trophy at the Red Raider Classic on Jan. 17 with 209 points.
In calculator, the team of senior Eva Thiessen, junior Victoria Baros and sophomore Taylor Morris took second overall with Thiessen in first overall. In 12th grade science, Thiessen was first. In 11th grade science, Baros was third. In 10th grade science, Morris took fifth.
In literary criticism, senior Serena Wiebe was fourth.
In mathematics, the team of Thiessen, junior Avery Wood, junior Addison Armstrong and sophomore Jacob Gonzales took first overall. Thiessen took first in the 12th grade division. Wood was first and Armstrong was second in the 11th grade division. In the sophomore division, Gonzales was third.
In number sense, the team of Thiessen, senior Tristan Stixrud and freshman Samuel Thiessen took second overall with Thiessen in second and Stixrud in sixth. In the 12th grade division, Thiessen was second and Stixrud was fourth. In the ninth grade division, S. Thiessen was second.
In ready writing, junior Camila Jimenez took fifth.
In science, S. Thiessen was fourth in the ninth grade division.
In journalism, the team of seniors Melissa Gutierrez, Mia Cowan, juniors Mattie Hice and Anaiah Beydoun took first overall with 117 points.
In copy editing, Beydoun was second,and Gutierrez took third.
In editorial writing, Hice took first.
In feature writing, Cowan took first, and Hice was third.
In headline writing, Hice was first and Cowan was fourth.
In news writing, Gutierrez took second, while Beydoun was third.
The next meet for the students is Feb. 14 at Texas Tech.
