Three compete in tennis regional

Three tennis team members were defeated in regional competition in Lubbock on April 19-20, wrapping up the season.

In women’s singles senior Jenna Johnson won her first round against Pecos and fell to Abilene Wylie in her second round.  This was Johnson’s second visit to regionals.

“I wasn’t as nervous this year,” Johnson said. “Because I went as district champion, I played the number two girl. The competition started out hard.”

Women’s doubles seniors Barbara Segovia and Cynthia Martinez fell to Abilene Wylie in the first round.

“It was tough because there was more competition than what I thought,” Martinez said. “Having advanced to regionals taught me to make better decisions and hold up strong under pressure situations.”

Regionals was a first-time experience for the doubles team.

“Regionals was really nerve racking,” Segovia said. “It was more fun going in doubles than as an individual.”

The team came in second at district to Fort Stockton with 50 points.

Coach Rhonda Burns credits the team’s district success to hard work, determination and experience.

“When you have eight seniors, there is a lot of experience that comes from playing matches,” Burns said. “They all worked hard during practice and took every match seriously.”
