GOOD SPORT–Column Three: BCS and other things that scare columnists

Let me start off by getting on the bad side of 90 percent of Texas by saying, I HATE FOOTBALL. Yea, I said it. The prospect of watching over-paid monkeys knocking the snot out of each other is not my thing. Meanwhile, spectators get more involved in it than important issues that affect our everyday lives and futures. Who cares about Kim Jong-un when the Bears are playing? If it wasn’t for cheerleaders, the entire sport would be a waste.

However, I attempted to give this subject as much of my almighty attention as I could since it was my assignment, but it was a struggle.

Now less rambling from a madman and more about the subject, the Bowl Championship Series. BCS is a series of college matches, AKA bowls, to show ranking. Teams are picked by a system of berths and statistics I don’t quite understand. These teams then compete in bowls depending upon a team’s rank. The top two teams go head-to-head in the National Championship Bowl. The winners win, crowd cheers and the monkeys get more pride, a shiny trophy and probably lucrative professional contracts.

There may be a conspiracy behind this BCS system. According to many fans, the system is rigged because certain teams are ignored or put in positions where they can gain very little in the standings, which is understandable looking at records from past seasons. Undefeated teams have been lower on standings than teams with losses.

Now I may not watch much football, but that doesn’t sound right to me. Apparently whoever dishes out the big bucks, gets the big trophy…surprising? Football politics work just like the rest of the world. Money buys all things nowadays, apparently including championships. This may not be the fairest system, but as long as people keep throwing away their cash to watch, that’s all that matters.

There are also allegations against a certain Cam Newton (Scam Newton). Newton’s parents accepted a large sum of money for their son  to play for the Auburn Tigers. This transaction was brought to light,  Newton received a very brief detention, but got pardoned shortly after with a “under investigation” label so he could still be in contention for not only the national championship but also the Heisman Trophy. For those not aware, amateur players or their parents accepting money is a big no-no.

Now being a little less cynical, I would like to point out I have nothing against football players. I kid about them being big dumb brutes but I know they are actually intelligent and kind-hearted a lot of the time. My family and I are even family friends of Mason Walters who plays for the University of Texas.

Pro football players get a lot of money, but a good majority donate to charities. One thing not many football skeptics realize is where these players come from. Many of these players didn’t grow up in the best conditions. If it wasn’t for football these people might be stuck on the streets or in other unfavorable situations. Football is a saving light for many players. Sure, some aren’t great role models, but it shouldn’t condemn all of them.

I’m not the biggest football fan, but a cheating is cheating. The NCAA football program brings in millions of fans and billions of dollars. Is it too much to ask that the NCAA and its bowl system play fair so that years later, universities and professional athletes won’t have to give back their championship titles and Heismans after the fact a la Reggie Busch? In the end, I guess more people just want to watch a good game no matter what corrupt message it sends.
