What!! I made a 40 on a test! How could that have happened!?! I studied the night before.
Even though I studied for the test, I couldn’t seem to remember anything while I was taking the test. I thought those 30 minutes the night before would help me remember, but they just made my brain tired.
I never used to like to take tests because I could never find a good way to study or my study habits were not good enough. I sometimes missed school so I wouldn’t have to take the test with the rest of the class, so I could get a little more information in my brain.
I started paying more attention in class, and found out that most of the information I needed to know was being given out by the teachers. Some of my teachers had a Kahoot programmed with the important things for tests, so it could help us memorize the important terms and help us get a better grade on the test or quiz.
I read some articles on better study habits. I found new ways to improve my studying. I would always highlight the “important’’ stuff because I thought it would pop out when I would reread it, but the whole page would end up looking like a color-coded worksheet.
I started reserving a certain time each day to study for a test that I knew would happen in a week. When I studied, I put my phone on Do Not Disturb, and set a 20-minute timer. I really enjoyed the peaceful environment I had created for myself. I told my parents I would be studying and placed a paper on my door that said, I AM STUDYING, NO DISRUPTION.
After the third day of studying for my test, I could still remember what most of the allusion terms for my English class were. But because I remembered them then, I started procrastinating. Instead I used those precious 20 minutes to go on TikTok and doom scroll then realize too late I forgot to study.
After that I began a plan for my study sessions. Time went by much faster and more efficiently than when I didn’t plan for it. I organized my homework from first period to my last, completed it, and then began my studying. I made flash cards or simply got college ruled notebook paper and wrote the words and definitions multiple times. It made all the difference in my test grades
Studying may not seem fun, but it helped me in the long run. I hate making bad grades, but I found the solution. It is better to create good study habits, than have an awful grade because of laziness. This change has made a big difference in the way I learn and in the way my grades look.
