SOUNDBITE: Bromance not as bad as first impression

SOUNDBITE: Bromance not as bad as first impression

I fully intended to review American Sniper for you, but apparently you were all already watching it because it was sold out. So instead of telling you whether I thought Sniper would win any of its many Oscar nominations, I was faced with the choice of the other movies that came out last Friday.

Pickings were slim–Paddington (no way) or The Wedding Ringer (a bromance). So The Wedding Ringer it was!

It won’t win any Oscars, but it wasn’t awful. Like many comedies before it, I assumed that it was going to fall short of making me laugh and just have a lot of “man humor” in it. Much to my surprise, it had a good plot and didn’t just make toilet jokes.

The Wedding Ringer is about a man with no friends who is getting married. Since he has no friends, he has no one for a best man or groomsman, so he hires a bestman and groomsmen to pretend to be his friends.

The set up is disasterous but also very funny. Several times I actually laughed out loud. Even now, recalling some of the things that happened, I’m grinning.

I can’t give any spoilers, but I can confirm that it doesn’t consist solely of rude humor. There is the occasional “man” joke but there are also some quite hilarious moments.

So, if you’ve already seen American Sniper and Paddington is a no, you still have an option in Hobbs–The Wedding Ringer–advantages: actual plot, kept my attention and made me laugh.
