ming mums still exist, it is by far the state where they are more widely used.
Whataburger even recognizes the “World’s Largest Mum” which is traditionally won by a Texas student.
The floral design classes in the Ag department use this tradition every year to raise money for other projects. This homecoming, the classes produced over 100 mums. They were left with only three mums not sold. They had to produce mums faster because of the early homecoming date.
“It was extremely hard this year,” Ag teacher Misty Day said. “The students put in a lot of effort. They each made three in two weeks.”
The mums ranged in size and design with multiple colors and ornaments available.
Floral design sophomore Brianna Gomez said the hardest part was stapling the flower to the circle of cardboard, while junior Nayla Hernandez said she struggled making military braid.
“They seem old-fashioned,” Gomez said, “but I still like them.”
Not everyone likes the mum tradition.
“They are expensive,” sophomore Mycaila Castro said, “and you only wear them one time.”
