Theater Department Prepares for Third Production in Land of Oz

Theater Department Prepares for Third Production in Land of Oz

With adrenaline pumping they take their positions. The countless hours of rehearsal, the sweat and the exhaustion all come down to this one moment. The moment of truth. Opening night.

“I love theatre,” senior Savanna Winn said. “The thrill right before the curtain opens is amazing. You’re always on your toes.”

For Director Josh Harriman, directing two shows Godspell and Epic Proportions simultaneously proved to be worth it.

“Both casts were really good,” Harriman said. “They were good to work with.”

Harriman said directing in Seminole is more convenient than directing in Rogers, where he taught his first five years.

“It’s cool here; we actually have a theater,” Harriman said. “In Rogers, we had to use the gym and build our own stage.”

Harriman said he appreciated all the technical aspects the little theatre offers, like built-in lights.

“There is so much support here,” Harriman said. “There is a lot of talent.”

The theatre program offers an outlet for students. Sophomore Tonya Sodd said she enjoys theatre and wants to pursue it as her profession.

“Theatre is a lot better,” Sodd said. “We have more control now. Godspell was so much fun.”

The department’s next production will be The Wizard of Oz which will open Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the junior high auditorium and with encore performances on Jan. 9 at 2:30 p.m. and Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

The main roles are played by junior Jasmine Torres as Dorothy, junior Chastin Jackson as the scarecrow, senior Savanna Winn as the tinman and senior Reed Chappell as the lion. The production includes an ensemble of 125 munchkins played by children ranging from second to fifth grade.
