Back attcha– Sophomore Chris Owen returns serve to a Greenwood player during a practice match on Jan. 29. Owen and sister senior Aubrey Owen became doubles partners this season.

The tennis team will play in Levelland on Feb. 19-20. They played Monahans yesterday but no results were available at press time.

The team saw its first spring action in a scrimmage against Greenwood on Jan. 29.

“We did a lot of different match arrangements to try and get an idea on some playing options for this spring,” Coach Kevin Gersbach said. “We did not really keep track of all the different matches that we created. Out of the 26 or so matches that we did play, we only lost three.”

The team is evolving with new additions and new partner combinations. Senior Aubrey Owen returned to the team when she transferred back to SHS.

“I’ve gotten better at my backhand under spin,” Owen said. “I used to not be able to do this move but through a lot of practice I learned it. With a lot of practice, I hope to win regionals.”

Owen and partner Easton Swinnea got within a tie break of regionals last spring. “I think I have a good chance at making it to regionals this year,” Owen said. “I got a new doubles partner, and I think we will work well together. I have been praticing with my brother so that we can work better as a team.”

Owen’s partner is her brother, sophomore Chris Owen.

“My sister and I think we have a good chance at making it to regionals, mainly because we live with each other and know how we will each react to different moves on the court,” Chris said. “I have started to play a lot better. I have learned to read my partner’s moves.”

Chris likes the way his game has evolved. “As a player, I have improved in all my serves and swings,” Chris said. “I have gotten quicker and improved my reflexes.”

Senior Elizeth Villa has been playing since she was in middle school.

“I’ve improved as a player, but I plan on getting better as a team,” Villa said. “I try to work as hard as possible to continue to get better.”

Villa wants to get to regionals.

“As time goes on I improve little by little and hopefully increase my chances,” Villa said. “I plan to improve enough to enjoy my last year in tennis.”
