GOOD SPORT: When in Rome…Columnist explores wide world of sports coverage

The thing about sports these days is that…I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s more like I choose not to watch sports. I don’t hate them or anything; they just never attracted me. Surprisingly, with my luck, my mutual relationship with sports had to come to an end. It was a casual day just learning about journalism…but something was strange. Ms. Williamson asked me to write a column for the newspaper. I asked her what I needed to write a column about, and what she said changed my life forever. It was a column on sports!

We came to the conclusion that for me to be able to write a column about sports, I would need to be brainwa–I mean, immersed in sports. How did I do this? you ask. I simply gave up my weekend to ESPN highlights and every other source of sports known to man. I will admit I’m feeling more masculine as I type this. I wanted to learn if the Cowboys still play horribly, if people still liked Lebron even though he left the Heat, or if Peyton Manning was still the the best quarterback in the NFL.

Let’s start with the Dallas Cowboys. It doesn’t take a genius to know that the Cowboys have played poorly, ended up pretty badly in the past few years, losing a lot of fan support and respect. Imagine my surprise to find out that as of right now, it almost seems like they have it together. I mean they’re 7-3 as I write this. On the other hand, I have trusted them before and they could still choke in the near future and plummet into the pits of Dallas. It doesn’t seem impossible for the Cowboys to go far in the playoffs, but then what do I know? Maybe I’ll start playing fantasy football to get a better grasp on this sport. The one thing I do know is that this will be an interesting football season.

Now to the “king” of basketball…Lebron James left the Heat for the Cavaliers (I would have had to have been dead not to have heard about this). The result of this caused the Heat to panic for a few days, but then they realized they still have a team. The Heat is doing well even without the help of Lebron. Take a look at how the Cavaliers are doing; they ended up losing to the Jazz for goodness sake. This wasn’t expected because Lebron is supposedly such an amazing player. Then again, the Heat seems fine without him, so perhaps it takes a village…to win a championship. The Cavaliers, however, aren’t unbeatable with Lebron. Jazz guard Gordon Hayward showed us Lebron’s true colors on the court. With Hayward’s stuff of Lebron and the amazing buzzer beater during overtime, Lebron was looking positively human. Personally, I wish I was more of an NBA fan because some of this stuff sounds interesting and awesome.

Now let’s go back to the NFL, way back into the past. Back to San Francisco 49er Joe Montana, one of the best quarterbacks of his time. Today we say Peyton Manning is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, but unfortunately, Peyton, only one quarterback can be the best. Montana has a combined six Super Bowl wins and MVP awards. Manning gets his success from his four MVP awards. I think if Manning keeps on playing this well for a few more years, then Manning will surpass Montana. Then again Manning will have to push his limits even further, and hopefully not end his season early. I’m just a novice sports enthusiast, but that’s the way I see it.

This experience has taught me a thing or two. I learned that most of the time games don’t get exciting until the end. I really don’t regret using my weekend for research material on sports. I found a great deal of it highly interesting. I might become an NBA fan. I might not make it through a lot of games, but those highlight shows give me all the scores and more. I might not be a Cowboy fan any time soon, but I can’t help hoping (secretly) that Tony Romo finally gets somewhere with his team.

Yes, I do feel I accomplished something with my weekend of sports… otherwise my weekend would have been spent on cartoons.
