Iron Maidens qualify four to state

The Maiden powerlifting team took second place with 33 points at the region meet in Fort Stockton on March 1, qualifying four Maidens for state competition.

Sophomore Madi Werner lifted a total 560 pounds to take the championship in the 105-pound division, while freshman Amanda Rodriguez lifted a total 585 pounds to take the championship in the 114-pound division. Junior Sara Medrano took the championship in the 220-pound division, lifting a total of 800 pounds. Also qualifying for state as second place in the 148-pound division was sophomore Brittany Kelly, who lifted a total of 735 pounds.

Other Maidens who place included sophomore Tori Acosta who took third in the 132-pound division, lifting 590 pounds (10 pounds under the state-qualifying weight); sophomore Alexia Macias who took fourth in the 123-pound category, lifting 565 pounds total; senior Ariana Conner who took fourth in the 97 pound division, lifting 430 pounds total; sophomore Brittany Espinoza who took sixth in the 114-pound division, lifting a total weight of 515 pounds; sophomore Monica Alvidrez who took sixth in the 123-pound division, lifting 520 total pounds; freshman Janette Vargas who took sixth in the 198-pound division, lifting 590 pounds; and senior Elora Johnson who took ninth in the 114-pound division, lifting 435 pounds.

The state meet will be held in Corpus Christi on March 15.
