UIL academics takes second overall as speech team takes district team championship

The UIL academics team took second overall after speech competition finished the multi-day event on March 29. Andrews was first with 564.66 points, Seminole had 443 points, Greenwood had 232 points, Monahans had 143 points, Pecos had 125.33 points, and Fort Stockton had 107 points. (Points reflect mandatory team point caps as per UIL rules.)

The speech team took the overall district championship by scoring more points (182) than any other district school in speech events. The top three in each contest advance to regionals.

In informative speaking, senior Michael Fehr took first, senior Caleb Stanley was second and freshman Rachel Rempel took third.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Stanley was first, freshman Grace Howard was third and junior Joseph Rezac took fourth.

In persuasive speaking, senior Eli Call was first, senior Dane Wimmer took second, and Howard was fourth.

In poetry interpretation, sophomore Daniel Lapusan was first, sophomore Aubrey Brown was third, and senior Laura Garcia was fourth.

In prose interpretation, senior Cloe Webb was first, and Fehr took second.
