The academic team earned 24 points at the state academic meet in Austin on May 5-9. Senior Katie Garcia took second place in news writing. Junior Haylee Dodson took fifth in extemporaneous informative speaking. On May 9 freshman Jadon Hatley was named to the all-star cast for one-act play while senior Reed Chappell was named as honorable mention cast.
The UIL academic team took second place overall at the region meet on April 16 with 160 points, qualifying the one-act play cast and crew and six individuals for state competition on May 5-11 in Austin. Abilene Wylie was first overall with 173 points.
The speech (69 points) and journalism (47 points) teams took region championships.
Individual state qualifiers (who placed first, second or third) include Dodson who was first in informative speaking, Garcia who was first in news writing, Chappell who was second in persuasive speaking, junior Brooklynn James who was second in poetry interpretation, junior Jasmine Torres who was third in poetry interpretation and senior Savanna Winn who was third in prose interpretation.
The one-act play cast and crew advanced to state along with Decatur after competition on April 14.
Winn and Hatley were selected to all-star cast, while Chappell was named as honorable mention all-star cast. Junior Jack Cagle was selected as best lighting technician.
Other students who placed in the top six and earned points included Garcia who was fourth and state alternate in editorial writing, Garcia who was fifth in feature writing, senior Jennifer Hughes who was fourth and state alternate in news writing, junior Tanner Moore who was fourth and state alternate in prose and junior Angela Sims who was fifth in prose.
