Twenty-two individuals and four teams advanced to the Region I UIL meet at Texas Tech on April 14-16.
One of those teams was the one-act play Players in the Game which advanced from area competition on April 7 along with Snyder’s play. Senior Reed Chappell and freshman Jadon Hatley were named to the all-star cast, while juniors Mason Griffin and D.J. Rickman were named to the honorable mention cast.
The UIL academic team took the district championship with 516 points during competition held March 28, 29 and 31. Andrews was in second with 374, followed by Monahans with 233, Fort Stockton with 202 and Greenwood with 157.
One-act play competition rounded out the district meet adding 40 points to the total as SHS’s Players in the Game by Dale Wasserman advanced to area on April 7 at Midland College along with Greenwood’s play. Chappell was named best actor, while senior Savanna Winn and junior Chastin Jackson were named to the all-star cast. Juniors Brooklynn James and Jasmine Torres were chosen as honorable mention cast.
The speech team took the district championship, earning 160 points in five events on March 29.
In informative speaking, junior Haylee Dodson was first, sophomore Trey Dodson was third and sophomore Kevin Wallace was sixth.
In Lincoln-Douglas debate junior Zach Mendoza was third and sophomore Jasmine Ruiz was fourth.
In persuasive extemporaneous speaking junior Tanner Moore was first, Chappell was second and sophomore Shawn Barndollar was fifth.
In poetry interpretation James was first, Torres was third and senior Nate Maxwell was fourth.
In prose interpretation Winn was first, Moore was second and junior Angela Sims was third.
In number sense, sophomores Dexter Longley and Elijah Becker tied for fourth place.
In science, the team of Longley, junior Ed Velo, Becker and senior Tommy Harms took the district championship with Longley in third, Velo in fourth and Becker in fifth. Becker took an extra three points for the top score in physics.
In calculator applications the team of junior Lindsey Ivins, senior Connie Friesen and Harms took the district championship with Ivins in first and Friesen in third.
In mathematics the team of Harms, Becker, junior Danielle Weeks and Longley took second place with Harms taking sixth place individually.
In literary criticism the team of junior Maggie Teichroeb, Friessen, senior Aidee Avila and junior Espy Moralez took second place overall with Teichroeb in second, Friesen in fourth and Avila in sixth.
In current events the team Moore, Chappell, H. Dodson and senior Winn took second overall with Moore in third and Chappell in fifth.
The social studies team of junior Matt Flowers, freshman Blue Franklin and senior Bradley Melton took the district championship with Flowers in first, Franklin in second and Melton in third. The team actually earned 47 points, but a cap of 37 is put on several of the team competitions.
The journalism team of senior Katie Garcia, senior Jennifer Hughes, sophomore Crystal Fehr and Sims took the district championship with 123 points over four events.
In news writing, Hughes was first, Fehr was second and Garcia was third.
In feature writing, Garcia was first and Sims was sixth.
In editorial writing, Fehr was first, Garcia was second and Hughes was fourth.
In headline writing, Hughes was second and Garcia was third.
