The tennis team continues its spring season tomorrow against Plainview on the SHS courts. This will be the first time the Seminole squad will face Plainview.
The team members are not sure what to expect from this new school.
“We’ve never played Plainview before, but I think they will be well,” sophomore Aracely Avila said. “I think they’ll be pretty good and pretty tough.”
Sophomore Crystal Flores has a different point of view.
“I don’t think [Plainview] will be a very challenging team,” Flores said. “We plan on doing better this match.”
Sophomore Alicia Villarreal is also optimistic.
“I feel confident about playing Plainview,” Villarreal said. “I’m going to try and stay positive, try to fight for every ball and try to get back in the game when I’m down by a lot of games.”
Even with an optimistic attitude, Villarreal is still working on weaknesses.
“I’ve been working on my volleys,” Villarreal said. “I hit them into the net too much. To fix this, I’ve been focusing and trying to hit the ball correctly.”
Improving weaknesses has benefitted team members’ scores and skills.
“I did pretty well against Levelland,” Villarreal said. “I played three matches and won.”
Competition is provided the experiences younger team members need.
“I did badly [in the Andrews tournament],” Avila said. “I was in the first division, and I haven’t played against people on that division. To improve my playing, I need to up my game.”
The tennis team will compete in the Shallowater match on Feb. 17-18, play which might give insight into a team which Seminole athletes will see in the new district alignment next year.
“I think Shallowater might be challenging,” Villarreal said. “I think everybody can be challenging, but I know we can beat them if we believe we can, try our best and are optimistic about it.”
