The Maidens fell to Lubbock Trinity on Sept. 20, 25-20, 25-13, 25-13, bringing their record to 5-24. They will face Permian at home at 12:15 p.m. on Sept. 24.
“We have a lot of talent even though we are a young team,” junior Maggie Savage said. “We just haven’t all gotten on the same page yet.”
Although the losses out weigh the wins, the Maidens continue to work hard.
“They are working their tails off constantly every day,” Coach Jackie Horton said. “Their attitudes are great, and wins and losses don’t always show up on the scoreboard.”
The Maidens have wins that aren’t game-related.
“Our real wins would be team unity, discipline, motivation and hard work,” Horton said. “I’m proud of the way they have handled themselves.
Horton said the team gets its strength through faith.
“Our number one strength is our trust in the Lord,” Horton said. “Our number two strength is our athletic ability, and our number three strength is our unity is getting better. Our main weakness is our inexperience.”
The Maidens will begin district on Sept. 27 against Greenwood.
“The season is low right now, but we’re slowly coming around,” junior Kristi Moralez said. “So far, Greenwood looks to be the toughest team.”
According to Horton, the Maidens are in one of the hardest districts in the state.
“District is tough, and it always has been,” Horton said. “The toughest team would have to be a toss-up between Monahans and Andrews.”
Freshman Destini Chavez has high expectations.
“I think when district gets here, we’ll be unstoppable,” Chavez said. “There’s really not a ‘toughest’ team. Everyone we’ve played against we should have beaten, but we’re just not confident enough.”
There are six freshmen among the 15 on varsity.
“Its fun being a freshman on varsity,” Chavez said. “It gives us competition because of the upperclassmen, and we have to work harder to prove ourselves and also that we’re capable to be on varsity.”
Battling nerves is one of the obstacles the freshmen face.
“I try to laugh off my nerves,” Chavez said. “If that doesn’t work, I try to hit the ball and score.”
Horton said that God has been good, the team hasn’t had injuries yet and the young team is working out fine.
“We just need to gain more experience to get into the playoffs,” Horton said. “The lack of experience is hurting us on a varsity level.”
