Today and tomorrow the tennis team hosts Brownfield, Levelland, Monahans, Trinity and SPCHEA.
“There’s not a specific team I’m worried about playing,” Coach Rhonda Burns said. “It’s to early in the season to tell.”
Since many of the varsity players graduated last year, this year the underclassmen had to step to a higher level.
“This year my only senior is Noah Maxwell,” Burns said. “He’s really stepped up to the challenge and become a leader.”
Maxwell who lost his doubles partner to graduation had to find different ways to challenge himself.
“Me being the only senior is a change that has affected me,” Maxwell said. “I don’t have another senior or someone on or higher than my level to practice with.”
Most of the team is under 16 years.
“Our team is very young,” Burns said. “It’s mostly made up of freshmen and sophomores.”
The team is working to improve strengths and eliminate weaknesses.
“Our weakness is that the younger players don’t move their feet,” sophomore Alicia Villarreal said. “Our strength is that we know how to work as a team.”
Supporting each other as a team plays into the team strengths.
“We always cheer for each other,” Villarreal said. “We also make up cheers.”
