The Maidens finished the season with a 9-24 record and a 3-6 district record, coming in fourth in district after narrowly missing the playoffs after a seeding game for third against Fort Stockton, 15-9, on April 25.
“Our district is very evenly matched,” Coach Carol Vaughn said. “Everyone split games except for Andrews who won very close ball games. Don’t let the record fool you. These young ladies overcame more than their share of adversity.”
The Maidens will lose three seniors to graduation.
“Our senior leadership was critical this year,” Vaughn said. “And I couldn’t have asked for better leaders than Bianca Sanchez, Valerie Villalva and Naomi Alvidrez.”
The season will serve as inspiration for next year.
“We just need to try harder and practice more,” junior Berenice Dominguez said. “We could have done better if we had tried harder. We need to stay more focused and have the mentality to win.”
District opponents gave the Maidens challenges both mentally and physically.
“Andrews was the hardest,” junior K.K. Horton said. “We let them get into our heads, and we just fell apart.”
Losing the playoff seeding game does not dishearten Vaughn.
“We had things that didn’t fall our way,” Vaughn said. “On any given day, that game could go the other way.”
