One-act play advances to area as academic team takes second place in district

Second place– The academic team which includes 25 scoring categories including one-act play and speech took second place as the district meet finished on April 7 in Monahans.

The one-act play completed the UIL’s new bi-district phase on April 9 in Seminole, advancing to area along with Andrews and San Elizario. Greenwood had the alternate play. One-act will compete in the area round in Midland next week.

Junior Blayne Childers and sophomore Nikki Loewen were named best actor and actress respectively. Junior Kelby Miller was all-star cast, while senior Kyle Rickman was honorable mention. The best sound crew award went to SHS as well.

The academic team took second place overall in the district meet in Monahans on April 6-7. The meet was the final phase of the district meet which included cross-examination debate and one-act play which competed earlier in the spring.

Andrews took the overall championship with 559 points, Seminole took 522 points, Greenwood took 144 points, Pecos took 104 points, Monahans took 102 points, and Fort Stockton took 57 points.

In calculator applications,sophomore Bethany Jones took third, senior Brooke McCormick took fourth, junior Jordan Lashaway took fifth. The team which included junior Jocelin Loewen took first overall and advanced to regionals.

In current issues and events, Rickman took third qualifying for regionals. Senior Jimmie Vaughn took fourth, and the team, which included juniors Chris Arzate and Antonio Porras, took second overall.

In literary criticism, sophomore Faith Klassen took second and junior J.D. Martin took third. The team which included sophomore Kree Ellison took first overall and advanced to regionals.

In mathematics junior Neil Thiessen took first, senior Mark Harms took third and Loewen took fifth. The team which included junior Abby Navarro took first overall and advanced to regionals.

In number sense, Lashaway took fifth.

In ready writing, junior Tori Acosta took third advancing to regionals.

In science, Loewen took second qualifying for regionals,  and Navarro took fourth. The team, which included Thiessen and Harms took second place overall. Thiessen was the runner-up for top physics score.

In social studies, junior Royce Snethen took third qualifying for regionals. The team, which included juniors Ethan Ruiz, Sara Fehr and Melissa Ramos took second overall.

In spelling and vocabulary, sophomore Madeline Hiebert took second and Acosta took third both qualifying for regionals. Sophomore Nick Acosta tied for fourth. The team, which included sophomore Yesenia Olivas, took second overall.

The speech team, which includes all the speaking events, took first overall.

In informative speaking, junior Cassandra Schultz was first and Porras was third both qualifying for regionals. Arzate took sixth.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Schultz was first and Ruiz was third both qualifying for regionals.

In persuasive speaking Rickman was first, senior Abe Harder was second and Vaughn was third all qualifying for regionals.

In poetry interpretation, junior Daniel Griffin was first, sophomore Ashley Harder was second both qualifying for regionals. Junior Vanessa Torres was fourth.

In prose interpretation, Childers was first, junior Ivan Froese was second and Miller was third, all qualifying for regionals.

The journalism team, which includes four events, took second overall.

In news writing, sophomore Eva Neufeld was first, and junior Sara Fehr was third both qualifying for regionals.

In feature writing, senior Arin Hindman was fourth, and Fehr was fifth.

In editorial writing, senior Sarah Patterson was second qualifying for regionals. Hindman was sixth.

In headline writing, Patterson was second qualifying for regionals. Neufeld was fifth and Hindman was sixth.
