Indians rain on West Plains in first district win

Body guards– Junior lineman Brian Peters and senior lineman Ruben Gonzales make room for senior quarterback Blake Flowers as he looks for a receiver during second quarter play in the district match up with West Plains on Oct. 7. Flowers threw for 328 yards.

As the rain poured down on Wigwam Stadium on Oct. 7, the Indians faced a slippery district opener against West Plains.

The Wolves took the first score, but the Indians evened it out with 7:14 in the first quarter when quarterback Blake Flowers passed to senior receiver Cuyler Cramer on a combined 90-plus yards of offense. Senior kicker Jesus Favela Alvarez kicked the extra point.

Sophomore defensive back Braden Bailey scooped up a bobbled Wolves’ punt to put the Indians ahead, 14-7, while Favela Alvarez’s point after was good.

West Plains would score, with 9:12 in second, bringing the score even at 14 all.

Both senior running back Garrett Lentz and senior wide receiver Hector Contreras would add touchdowns in the second quarter, while both points after were successful by Favela Alvarez.

In the third quarter, West Plains would score first with 10:38 remaining, but Favela Alvarez  answered with a field goal with 5:43 left. West Plains scored again, coming within three of the Indians, 31-28.

Junior receiver Myles Espino put the cherry on top of the Indian win with a 48-yard touchdown reception from Flowers followed by a Favela Alvarez extra point.

The Indians face Borger at 7 p.m. tonight in Borger.
