Five Maidens qualify for region powerlifting

Eye on state– Deadlifting 330 pounds, senior Siria Martinez takes first in the Big Spring meet in the 181-pound division. Martinez, who took second in state last year, lifted a combined 885 pounds over three events to win on Jan. 11.

Five Maiden powerlifters qualified for region powerlifting competition in Monahans on March 7.

Competitors had to be in the top 12 in the region in their weight classes to advance.

In the 181-pound division, senior Siria Martinez stands in the second position with a combined weight total of 960 pounds, 70 pounds behind Snyder’s Saraya Velasquez.

In the 148-pound division, junior Kasey Long is in the fourth position with a combined weight of 770 pounds, 60 pounds behind Perryton’s Cheyanne Buck. Senior Karah Lambert is in 10th position with a combined lift of 715 pounds.

In the 123-pound division, sophomore Arielle Fehr took 12th position with a combined weight of 575 pounds, tied with Monahans’s Noveah Sanchez.

In the 259-pound division, sophomore Yarely Delgado is in the ninth position with a combined weight of 675 pounds, just 20 pounds behind Monahans’s Gabby Acosta.

To qualify for state, a lifter must be in the top two at regionals.
