One team, two individuals qualify for region cross country

REGIONAL BOUND– Junior Hailey Davis runs at the Pecos golf course during district competition on Oct. 14. Davis took fifth as the top Maiden runner.

Two individual runners and one team qualify for the Oct. 28 regional cross country meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

The Maidens came in third place with top runner junior Hailey Davis qualifying individually in fifth.

“I have one more week to practice until regionals,” Davis said. “I’m going to give it my all and hope for the best to make it back to state.”

Davis suffered an ankle injury last year and missed district.

“I feel like I ran faster my freshman year before the injury,” Davis said. “I have to try and build myself back up to that this year at regionals.”

Junior Micah Smith took eighth for the Indians, qualifying as an individual.

“The course was really flat so that was good,” Smith said. “I got a bit psyched out by those Andrews runners, but it was fun and I still made regionals.”

This is Smith’s third consecutive year of making it to regionals.

“My goal is to get top 20 and make it to state,” Smith said. “I’m going to push myself and we’ll see where I end up.”

Junior Macey Duncan was the fifth Maiden runner to finish which qualified the entire team for regionals.

“I ran really fast,” Duncan said. “I couldn’t even feel my legs.”
