In for two– Junior guard Tatum McGehee goes to rebound in case senior guard Karli McCord misses during the 81-41 Maiden win over Pecos on Feb. 10. McCord had 25 points on the night.

The Maiden basketball team will face Greenwood tonight to break the district championship tie for play-off seeding. The game will be at 6:30 p.m. at Permian High School.

Coach Leland Bearden said he wished they could have won it outright, but he is glad the Maidens have a chance to still win first.

“We lost to Greenwood the second time because we did not block out well,” Bearden said. “Also we had very poor shot selection.”

Bearden said he prefers to go into playoffs as a one seed because “Going in first seed would help us get farther in playoffs.”

Junior guard Jerica Davis said that the Maidens currently have the talent to go to state, but they have to catch up mentally and begin to work better as a team.

“We need to work on blocking out in practice more,” Davis said. “Also we need to work on blocking press and press break. Those are really important.”

The loss to Greenwood frustrated the Maidens after they had beaten the Rangerettes in the first round.

“We are going to win this time because we’re a better team,” junior post Haylie Hicks said. “We are going to do what works and not change in the middle of the game.”

The Maidens beat Pecos 88-41 on Feb. 10, taking their district record to 9-1 and their overall record to 21-7.
