Tennis team takes fourth in district meet

Tough return–Freshman Judy Klassen returns the ball during third-round play against Kaitlyn Edwards of Cooper. Edwards won, 6-1, 6-0, but Klassen battled back against Tanya Melton of Levelland, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, eventually taking third place overall in women’s singles.

The tennis team took fourth with 15 points in the district meet in Seminole on April 8-9. Andrews was first, Levelland was second, Cooper was third,  Shallowater was fifth and Estacado was sixth.

In women’s singles, freshman Judy Klassen advanced in four rounds before playing a playback for second, losing to Zayra Gomez of Andrews, 6-2, 6-1.

In mixed doubles, the team of freshman Jonathan Klassen and sophomore Elizeth Villa fell in the second round, 6-2, 3-6, 75, to Maldonado and Tyson of Shallowater. The team of sophomores Aubrey Owen and Easton Swinnea advanced four rounds, winning in a playoff for third, 6-1, 6-1, over Maldonado and Tyson.

In JV women’s singles, freshman Michelle Guevara advanced three rounds to take second place in a finals loss, 6-0, 6-0, to Patricia Clay of Andrews.
