We have one life, so why waste it? We should be taking the “You Only Live Once” slogan seriously. We don’t get another shot at life, so why are we making excuses about doing things that could make our lives better in the future? We cannot afford to take these risks.
We should be thinking long term instead of just what we can get away with today. We’ve been in school for at least 10 years, so we should know how to get homework done and how to study for a test by now. If we cannot perform daily tasks like these, how do we expect to perform daily at work as adults? For that matter, if we don’t do a good job with these small things in our lives, how will we live the lives we want with the houses, cars, insurance, families, businesses, etc., we want to have? The habits we form now are more than likely the ones we will have as adults. We need to start making our life worth something before it’s too late.
Texting and driving is another risk not worth taking. No matter how curious you are to know what is in that message, it is not worth risking your life or the life of other drivers. An alarming amount of students in this building text and drive “all the time” according to a recent poll of over 80 percent of the student body. We already risk our lives just getting into our cars; we don’t need illegal cellphone use to increases our chances of being harmed.
Life does throw us a handfuls of problems at the most unpredictable times, but that is how it will be when we are adults. On any given day, our children could be sick, our plumbing could burst and/or our bosses could make us work overtime. We can’t always help when these problems arise, but we don’t need to use YOLO as an excuse for why something isn’t being done. We need to take responsibility.
You do only live once on this earth, so you need to make the most of it before it is too late. We can’t go back in time and make different/better choices. Perhaps the NBC “Saturday Night Live” crew said it best in its video spoof of YOLO on Jan. 26–“You Oughta Look Out”.
