The holidays bring millions in sales, and the opening of this madness is Black Friday. This lures in the innocent and experienced shoppers. Lower prices on Christmas gifts! What a deal. Although it sounds good, I wouldn’t want to take part on the special day with those crazy people. Why can’t these shopping days sound as peaceful as they do in classic Christmas songs? “Silver Bells” for instance, might as well be changed to this…
City sidewalks busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there’s a feeling of tension
Children crying,
People shoving,
Meeting snarl after snarl
And on every street corner you’ll hear
Angry yells, angry yells,
It’s Christmas time in the city.
Jostling, hear them scream,
Soon it will be Christmas Day.
Lines of adults, even children
Getting beat black and blue
As the shoppers rush home with contusions.
Hear the carts crash,
See the moms punch,
This is Santa’s big scene
And above all this mayhem you’ll hear
Angry yells, angry yells,
It’s Christmas time in the city.
Jostling, hear them scream,
Soon it will be Christmas Day.
It doesn’t sound so good in song. Shoppers getting killed on Black Friday is kind of an indicator that it’s gotten way out of hand. People get shot or stabbed just because they have been awake for over 20 hours and everything in the store is on a first-come-first-serves situation so people get jealous and act on their feelings. Some shoppers or employees are trampled to death while maniacs are stampeding into the store. Are we animals? When I hear stories of people being trampled to death I think of the Lion King when Mufasa is stuck in the herd of antelopes. I hate that part of the movie. I wouldn’t care if it were the best sale in the world, I value my life and wouldn’t want to be involved in scenes like the fight over a set of sheets that brought the police to the Hobbs Walmart this Black Friday.
When situations get stressful I try to relax more than ever. I’ve just got to balance the situation. My mom says it’s a middle child’s quality to stay out of conflict, and I greatly dislike arguing. The Christmas season gives me lots of relaxation time. I don’t need stress like Black Friday brings.
Companies came up with Black Friday to get out of the black and into the red, balancing corporate budgets. That’s exactly what they’re doing on these days. People will buy anything and everything, especially if it’s the last item. I doubt the sales are big enough to wait in the cold for many hours just to get a TV. Now people don’t have to wait as long because some stores open on Thanksgiving Day. This is so ridiculous. I know people don’t like to work on the holidays or even Black Friday, so why do employers force these employees to work longer on what could easily become the worse day of their lives? It’s so thoughtless, but I guess those store owners are not worried about it as they enjoy time at home with their families while their employees suffer.
I like the holidays and would hate for something as problematic as Black Friday take priority over the time with my family.
