When a new building in town is completed, it seems like everyone is interested, which is the case with the new junior high school. Before it was even open, I drove with my parents to see the new school. It was locked up so we drove around and took a look at the back of it. Afterward, we headed home, but before we even got past the light at McDonalds, the police pulled me over. Someone in the neighborhood had seen us drive around the school and called the cops saying a suspicious car was circling the new school. This just goes to show the interest in the new school.
I finally went to see the interior of the school, and it is as impressive as the exterior. From the terrazzo floors to the flat screen televisions in the cafeteria and hallways, everything seems to be top notch. The classrooms are carpeted and the lights turn on when you enter the room. I guess the germaphobes got their input in with the lights. The halls seem wide enough to fit the Washington Monument in them, and the lockers are extremely tall. I’ll bet you could stuff a couple of sixth graders in each one.
During my tour, I saw that the choir and band rooms are massive, and the locker rooms are right out of Friday Night Lights. The boy’s lockers fold out to make a seat, because fold out seats help win games (in reality, they are that way to fit shoulder pads in). The gyms are nice and shiny, and a person can stand outside and watch both games at once to double the pleasure.
The cafeteria has three serving lines, with one serving Mexican food every day. I expected the Rolaids line to be right next to it but couldn’t find one. The other two lines are American food and “The Grill”. It looks like a college cafeteria.
I also went to junior high in a two-story building. It was nice, but Seminole Junior High makes the junior high I attended look like a 95-year-old penitentiary.
It’s the little things that make this school so special. Things that you don’t expect pop out at you like the floors. They are made with recycled bottles, which makes a sparkle that adds a nice effect making them not just any ordinary hallways. Another nice bonus is the microphones the teachers use. Each teacher is required to talk through a microphone while teaching, so that the teacher is heard over the PA system in that room. Each room is equipped with interactive whiteboards.
All in all, I was very impressed. It seems that no expense was spared. Seminole should be proud of this new addition to its fleet of schools. We have the nicest football field, softball field and tennis courts I have ever seen. I guess I’ll have to add the junior high to my list. Hopefully, the new additions to the high school will be just as nice.
