Four academic competitors qualify for state UIL

Region runner-up team–Seniors Rachel Froese and Heidi Giesbrecht earned 44 points and the second place team spot for journalism at Texas Tech on April 22. Giesbrecht qualified for state in editorial, features and headlines.

Four students advanced to the state meet after University Interscholastic League Region 1 academic meet on April 22.

Senior Heidi Giesbrecht took the region championship in headlines and also qualified for state in third in both editorials and features. She and senior Rachel Froese, who took sixth in feature writing, took the plaque for second place team at regionals, earning 44 points overall.

Freshman Kobe Cabello also took a region championship in prose interpretation. Junior Aubrey Brown qualified for state with third place in poetry interpretation, while junior Daniel Lapusan qualified in third for persuasive speaking.

The speech team earned 45 points, taking third overall. Additional points came from sophomore Rachel Rempel, who took fifth in informative speaking, and sophomore Leah Martin, who took sixth in prose interpretation.

Overall, the academic team took sixth in the region with 89 points.

The four state qualifiers will compete in six events at the University of Texas on May 17-18.
