Wrapping for others– Senior Geovanna Espino tapes wrapping paper on a gift for a client at the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center. The advanced cosmetology students will play elves and deliver the gifts today.

For the sixth year, the cosmetology SkillsUSA classes will provide gifts for Mental Health and Mental Retardation clients. The club buys gifts to wrap and give to the men and women at the Christmas party today.

“We talk about it in class then get everything organized during class for the party,” junior Judy Klassen said. “Everyone that is in more than one cosmetology period joins in to buy gifts and wrap them.”

Cosmetology teacher Shelly Touchstone said the students began buying and wrapping gifts right after Thanksgiving.

The group bought and wrapped 71 gifts–30 blue presents for the men and 41 red for the women.

“I really like it,” sophomore Judy Wiebe said.“This is my first time doing it, and I’m enjoying myself.”

For the party the cosmetology students will dress up as elves for the MHMR party were Santa comes to give away the gifts.

“It’s fun,” Touchstone said. “The people are just like little kids when Santa comes. It’s quite an experience for all of us going to the party.”
