Debaters take championship, qualify for state

State qualifiers–Junior Carlye Winfrey and freshman Cathryn Johnson advanced to state after winning the district cross-examination debate contest.

Two cross-examination debaters took the district championship recently, qualifying for state competition.

Junior Carlye Winfrey and freshman Cathryn Johnson took first place debating Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its funding and/or regulation of elementary and/or secondary education in the United States.

The pair will compete at the state meet on March 16-17 in Austin.

Other district debaters included freshman Alayna Amen and sophomore Jaicen Clark in fifth place and freshman Azalia Contreras and freshman Whitlee Tate in sixth place.

The three debater teams earned 34 points toward the overall district UIL academic championship which will continue in March.
