The Indian basketball “Jarsity” defeated Sweetwater, 55-39, on the road on Nov. 19.
“I think it’s really an opportunity for the younger generation to grow and to show what they’ve got,” Coach Tanner Moore said. “Even though we have some guys gone for football, we proceed like they aren’t missing. The younger guys are really talented. I try to coach the same no matter who’s on the team.”
Senior forward Brett Boyles is one of only a couple of seniors on the team.
“I keep motivated and focused knowing there are better players who are still yet to come,” Boyles said. “I can trust the younger players because I was once in that position where they needed to trust me.”
Sophomore guard Tristan Flemons said the chemistry and communication are parts of the Indian strength on the court.
“We keep focused in having a .5 record before the football players come back,” Flemons said. “We have a good coaching staff that helps keep us on track. We also have a higher IQ than other players, and our coaches have a better plan than most.”
Junior forward Aiden Schilling, who moved from Follett in the Northern Panhandle is getting varsity playing time with a new team. Flemons said Schilling is a good addition to the team.
“He brings the energy,” Flemons said. “He sets the tone for the game no matter if the other team is good or not.”
Sophomore C.J. Mendoza is also getting varsity playing time.
“Coach Moore gives us talks and helps us stay motivated,” Mendoza said. “I want to have fun with my friends, but I need to push forward because my team needs me.”
The lack of team members due to football play offs gives Boyles motivation.
“Our toughness and perseverance makes us better when we are faced with adversity,” Boyles said. “Whenever we lose a game we should have won–when we do get faced with adversity, we come out on top.” The Indians will travel to Lubbock Cooper on Nov. 26. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
