With two district match ups still to go, the undefeated Tribe tennis team clinched the district title with a win over Shallowater on Sept. 24. The 12-7 finish over the Mustangs marked the eighth in a row in the team’s undefeated district season so far.
In men’s doubles, senior Clancey Cope and junior Tristan Hare took a 6-4, 7-5 win over Shallowater’s Riley Criswell and Caleb Cunningham. The team of senior Zeke Carrillo and sophomore Derek Ware took a 6-2, 6-4 win over Josiah Allen and Landon Freitag. Sophomores Aldo Caballero and Maddox Savage fell to Cooper Bunting and Levi Swindell.
In women’s doubles, the team of junior Jazlyn Holmstrom and sophomore Addison Armstrong defeated Raleigh Phillips and Makenzie Robinson, 6-1, 6-2. The team of juniors Ivy Flores and Melany Vazquez Campos fell to Hanna Hulse and Cambria Jackson, 7-6, 7-6. Seniors Haylee Villanueva and Isabella Rudder defeated Kally Bennett and Henley Gibson, 6-3, 6-2.
In mixed doubles, junior Nathan Salazar and senior Isabella Hare defeated Isaac Salazar and Logan Navejar, 6-1, 6-3.
In men’s singles, Carrillo defeated Shallowater’s Allen, 6-4, 6-7, 10-8. Cope fell to Shallowater’s Freitag, 6-4, 4-6, 5-10. Ware defeated Shallowater’s Bunting, 6-4, 7-5. T. Hare fell to Shallowater’s Cunningham, 6-4, 6-3. Caballero fell to Shallowater’s Criswell, 3-6, 6-4, 10-5. Salazar fell to Shallowater’s Riley Mathewson, 6-4, 6-4.
In women’s singles, Armstrong defeated Shallowater’s Robinson, 6-4, 6-0. Holmstrom defeated Shallowater’s Phillips, 6-1, 6-3. Vazquez Campos defeated Shallowatoer’s Gibson, 6-3, 6-2. Flores fell to Shallowater’s Jackson, 6-1, 2-6, 10-3. Rudder defeated Shallowater’s Bennett, 6-4, 6-4. Villanueva defeated Shallowater’s Navejar, 6-2, 6-0.
Tribe tennis will travel to Levelland for a district match on Sept. 28.
