The Aqua Tribe’s 400-yard relay team of sophomore Carlos Arzate, senior Jeremiah Wolf, freshman Austin Peters and sophomore Gabryl Alaniz qualified for the state swim meet with a time of 3:49.02 regional meet in Andrews on Feb. 3.
“The boys have cut so much time this year,” Coach Danielle Sims said. “They are, for the most part, a young relay with two sophomores and a freshman. I could not be prouder of them. With how difficult our region is, they rose to the occasion.”
The top two in each event at region automatically qualify for state followed by the next eight fastest times across the regions.
The team took 9.14 seconds off their preliminary time and was called up as a wild card team to state based on the team’s fourth place regional time of 3:49.02.
Alaniz found out he will swim at state in the 50-yard freestyle at state after a call came at lunch time Wednesday. He finished fourth at region in a time of 23.57.
They will compete at state on Feb. 15-16 in the Josh Davis Natatorium at Northeast ISD in San Antonio.
Sims said the youth on her team has her “looking forward to the prospect of returning next year and they are already planning goals.”
The Indian team took seventh overall at region, while the Maiden team was 21st.
Other regional results include: Arzate with 11th place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:0788); Alaniz with seventh place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.39); Arzate, Wolf, Peters and Alaniz in sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.33); Peters with 10th in the 100-yard freestyle (59.24); Arzate with ninth place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.23)
