Tribe tennis advanced to the region semifinal after defeating Snyder, 10-7, in region quarterfinals on Oct. 17. The team will meet Canyon High on Oct. 19 in Abilene.
Coach John Armstrong said the Tribe would have a tough opponent in Canyon High, which is ranked third in the state. Canyon High defeated Canyon West Plains, 10-8, in their region quarterfinal on Oct. 17.
“We have to expect to play the best tennis we’ve played all year,” Armstrong said. “I feel like we are peaking at the right time. The kids are getting more confident each match. We have to take that confidence and use it to expect success.”
Senior Brayden Baumgartner was injured during the quarterfinal on Oct. 17 but said he expects to play in the region semifinal on Thursday.
In men’s doubles, Baumgartner and sophomore Tristan Hare fell to Snyder’s Nathan Dasani and Ean Terrazas, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5. Junior Zeke Carrillo and sophomore Nathan Salazar defeated Snyder’s Nicholas Delao and Nathan Jaimes, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Nathan Lorenzo and freshman Derek Ware defeated Snyder’s Kenon Martinez and Calvin Hough, 6-3, 7-6.
In women’s doubles, junior Haylee Villanueva and junior Isabella Hare defeated Snyder’s Elayna Cross and Chloe Hobrebueno, 6-3, 6-7, 10-8. Sophomore Ivy Flores and junior Isabella Rudder defeated Snyder’s Allison Flores and Heather Villa, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomores Karolynn Caballero and Melany Vazquez Campos defeated Snyder’s Guzman and Elena Herrero, 6-2, 6-2.
In mixed doubles, Snyders Gregory and Sarah Stelluti defeated junior Clancey Cope and sophomore Jazlynn Holmstrom, 6-7, 6-2, 10-7.
In men’s singles, Baumgartner fell to Snyder’s Dasani, 6-2 (withdrew). Carrillo fell to Snyder’s Terrazas, 7-6, 6-1, 10-5. Cope defeated Snyder’s Martinez, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5. Salazar fell to Snyder’s Hough, 6-1, 7-6, 10-6, T. Hare defeated Snyder’s Delao, 7-5, 7-5.
In women’s singles, Villanueva fell to Snyder’s Stelluti, 6-2, 7-5. I. Hare defeated Snyder’s Cross, 6-4, 6-2. Rudder defeated Snyder’s Hombrebueno, 2-6, 6-4, 13-11. Flores fell to Snyder’s Herrero, 6-1, 6-1. Vazquez Campos defeated Snyder’s Villa, 6-2, 6-2.
