Aqua Tribe sends six to regionals, Proffer breaks record again
Seven Aqua Tribe swimmers will advance to the region meet in Lubbock on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 after qualifying in the top six at district on Jan. 18 in Andrews.
Senior Andy Proffer took sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke to qualify after breaking his own school record once again in the preliminaries for the fifth time.
Proffer said he could break the record again at regionals by “making the speed of which I do my pulls faster.”
The women’s 400-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Stephanie Hiebert, junior Samantha Gutierrez, junior Amber Wilkey and sophomore Ana Nevarez took fourth to qualify.
The women’s 200-yard freestyle relay of Hiebert, sophomore Elizabeth Harder, Gutierrez and Nevarez also took fourth to qualify.
Nevarez said she’s really excited about qualifying in two events.
“I’m very proud of my relays because we worked really hard, and it shows,” Nevarez said. “They [teammates] did fantastically, and I’m really happy. They’re so much fun.”
The Maiden team took seventh in the district with 20 points, while the Indians took seventh with 11 points.
