Maiden volleyball will face Monahans in area match

Focus, focus, focus– Maiden Coach Jaqueline Horton encourages her team after a first set loss to Borger in the bi-district championship on Nov. 1. The Maidens took the match in five sets, qualifiying for area play against Monahans this weekend.

The Maiden volleyball team took the bi-district championship over Borger in five sets (25-27, 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 15-9) on Nov. 1 in Plainview, taking its overall record to 23-17.

The Maidens will face Monahans for the area championship on Saturday  in Andrews at 3 p.m.

During the bi-district round, the Maidens fell short in game one, but fought back in games two and three against Borger.

Senior Cambri Addison had 17 attacks in the bi-district match.

“We really had to work hard against Borger,” senior middle blocker Cambri Addison said. “We all had to come together to achieve the goal that we were striving for.”

A strong start was a goal for the Maidens, but the first set loss against Borger was tough for the Maidens.

“After the first set, Coach said that we needed to get our minds straight because she believed that we could do better,” Addison said. “She told us not to start late because it would get us in a bind.”

After the loss of the first set, Coach Jacqueline Horton motivated the team to dig deep and continue to fight for the win.

“Coach stayed up with us throughout the game,” senior outside hitter Brogan Purser said. “She was constantly yelling and cheering us on to keep us motivated.”

With the match against Monahans for the area championship looming, the Maidens need to dig deep. Monahans is at a 7-1 record in district with a 21-11 overall record.

“They’re decent,” Addison said. “They do have a good block, but we have a pretty good offense and defense. We can take them.”

The Maidens can’t afford to start slow against Monahans.

“We have to lay everything on the line,” junior outside hitter Taylor Roberts said. “It’s do or die.”
