WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Maidens aim higher with new season
With the new basketball season about to begin, the Maidens are looking forward to continuing where they left off last year. Getting beat by the eventual state champion Wylie in the regional finals really boosted the team’s confidence going forward.
“Making it to the regional finals last year meant a lot,” senior post Kelea Pool said. “It shows our community and the state of Texas that we can compete at that level.”
The Maidens are returning five lettermen from last year’s team, three of them with all-district honors.
“It’ll be different from last year,” senior guard Tatum McGehee said, “but, I think if we continue to put in the time and effort, we will be in the regional tournament again.”
The Maidens are missing a few from volleyball but are still making progress in practice and striving to get better every day.
“The girls are really looking good and working hard,” Coach Leland Bearden said. “They look good in drills and also when we do team offense and defense.”
The Maidens want to follow the same game plan as last year. “Our offense will continue to work the ball into the post and then the outside shot,” Bearden said. “We want to work from inside to outside.”
The Maidens are also working individually to help contribute.
“I’m working on becoming stronger and more aggressive in the paint when I get the ball,” Pool said. “I believe if we each put in extra effort after practice, we can make it to the regional finals, but we need to take one game at a time.”
