The Maidens take the momentum from a 65-36 win over Andrews into Pecos tonight to finish the first round of district play.

The Maidens’ punishing offense forces opponents to respect the post player and the three-point shot, making it difficult to double or triple team Maiden players without leaving scorers open. The Maidens proved this on Tuesday when they made 14 three-pointers against Andrews.

The Maidens continue to win despite injuries which at one point left the team with more injured players on the bench than healthy ones including the season-ending knee for last year’s first team all-district junior Kendall Freeman.

“The injuries hurt us a lot but we got Baylee Lopez back which helps,” Coach Leland Bearden said. “It hurt our depth, but we have a lot of other girls stepping up and taking leadership. We are bouncing back.”

The Maidens are 4-0 in district and 16-6 for the season.

“We are working on fine tuning offense and lots of conditioning so that we have can play better,” Bearden said. “To win district we’ll have to have good shot selection, better block outs and take care of the basketball better.”

The players know they can go deep into the playoffs if they have the right mind set.

“The sky is the limit,” junior guard Tatum McGehee said. “We are the ones who determine how far we will go, but state is the ultimate goal.”

With six games left in the regular season, Bearden wants the Maidens back on track.

“Despite all of the things we have faced during our season, we just want to have a fun season,” Bearden said. “We want to be as successful as we can.”
