Bearden’s bunch wants to eclipse bi-district

The Maiden basketball team is playing in the Polk Key Classic tournament in Abilene this weekend after starting the season with a 63-58 win over Frenship on Nov. 11.

The Maidens have been working hard in practice.

“We have been working on our offense, defense, and press,” senior post McKaylee Weishuhn said. “We also practice defense, press and free throws.”

The Maidens fell to Dalhart in bi-district last season, but they don’t intend for that to happen this time.

“The girls could go as far as they want this season,” Coach Leland Bearden said. “It depends on however far they set their minds to.”

With the change in district, the team has made changes to accommodate.

“Our new district is a tough one,” Bearden said. “We beefed up our preseason schedule. I hope it doesn’t affect the way we play.”

Senior post Baylee Lopez said she believes the Maidens could make it to state. Junior guard Tatum McGehee agreed.

“The sky is the limit,” McGehee said. “We are the ones who determine how far we will go, but state is the ultimate goal.”

The team finally has all its members back from volleyball.

“Despite all of the things we face during our season, we just want to have a fun season,” Bearden said. “We want to be as successful as we can.”
