Seminole powerlifting teams compete in their third outing tomorrow when they host the home meet at the old junior high gym.
“It’s hard to compete in front of a home crowd,” sophomore Andrew Alvidrez said. “They know you can do better so they expect more.”
Alvidrez did double duty between powerlifting and swimming, which was a sport he hadn’t competed in before.
“I did it to get in better shape,” Alvidrez said. “Swimming really works on your upper body and will help conditioning.”
Alvidrez, who took second at state last year, is currently ranked in the top 20 in the state. He qualified for regionals at the first meet of the season in Monahans on Jan.12.
“It felt good to get first,” Alvidrez said. “I’m leading the region with just that meet and don’t even have to go to any others.”
The Indians took second in Monahans.
“It was a great start to the season and gave us some good jumping off points,” Long said. “All of the new guys have some invaluable experience.”
Long said the Indians had a great showing the next week at Plainview as well. Every lifter improved from the Monahans lifts, some by 100 pounds or more.
Junior Michael Condarco placed fifth in Plainview which was his second career meet.
“People just talked to me about doing powerlifting,” Condarco said. “I decided to try it and ended up really liking it.”
On the women’s side junior Kinsey Tharp placed third at Plainview on Jan. 19. She said she is working toward state this year.
“Overall I need to get better,” Tharp said. “I need to make it personal and drive myself to state.”
Senior Selena Quintero took first in her weight class at Monahans.
“My goal is to improve every meet,” Quintero said. “Once my knee heals, it will be a lot easier.”
