The district meet did not go as planned for two-time regional qualifier junior Michael Condarco.
“I knew it was going to be harder this year,” Condarco said. “I just need to train harder for next year.”
Condarco took 13th at the district meet in Lubbock on Oct. 23, three places out of the medals.
“I need to stride to get better,” Condarco said. “I need to build up confidence for next season.”
A new district provided strong competition coupled with trying to keep runners healthy.
“At the beginning of the season we competed,” Indian Coach Rick Spruill said. “The only real thing that hurt us were injuries.”
Freshman Steven Ontiveros finished 24th.
“It’s a lot tougher in high school,” Ontiveros said. “I need to work harder and not give up.”
The majority of the runners were underclassmen.
“I need to improve everything,” freshman Bryce Darby said. “However, it was a really fun experience.”
Maiden Coach Dickie Faught thinks his team has potential.
“This year they were really young,” Faught said. “They work really hard and have a bright future.”
The district course at Mae Simmons Park was one the runners had seen earlier in the season, and it presented challenges.
“They didn’t mark any of the holes,” Condarco said. “I had no idea where any were.”
Condarco ended up stepping in one and injuring his knee. The same thing happened to a Levelland runner.
“When I passed her she was saying that something hurt,” sophomore Arin Hindman said. “So when I finished, I…ran the last 200 yards with her.”
Young teams show promise. “Every year we get stronger and stronger,” Spruill said. “We didn’t have any seniors, so I expect everyone back with a strong freshman class coming in.”
